About us
The Society was formed in 1968 as the Mayford History Society. We changed our name to Mayford and Woking District History Society in 1983 to reflect our broadened horizons. By 1999, we had members from all over Woking Borough so we changed our name again to Woking History Society. Members do not have to live in the Woking area but just to have an interest in Woking’s history. With the use of Zoom for winter meetings, members who live far away can join in as well.
Activities
We have a yearly programme of at least 10 talks by visiting speakers on aspects of the history of Woking and other historical topics.
Other activities include visits to places of historic interest and opportunities to work with fellow organizations such as The Lightbox and the Surrey History Centre. We also encourage members to carry out historical research and to give presentations on their work by way of the monthly talks.
Venues
We meet in person in Woking High School, Morton Road, Horsell, GU21 4TJ or else on Zoom.
Generally the Zoom meetings are held November to March and the 'summer' talks held April to October. The Talks page will tell you where each meeting is to be held.
E-journal
We also produce an e-journal which is emailed to members with news and articles of interest. The e-journal can be found on the Publications page two years after its issue to members.
What does it cost?
Subscriptions are due in December. Single membership costs £15. Joint membership for (2 adults in the same house) costs £20
